Spain's Gay Marriage Law Reaffirmed
Spain became the world's third country to approve gay marriage in 2005 under a Socialist controlled country. The Popular Party took power in 2011 after the Socialists were ousted over their handling of the economy. The gay marriage law angered the predominant Roman Catholic Church but opinion surveys showed most Spaniards supported the gay marriage law. The gay marriage law is still in place, and as of 2012 more than 22,000 gay marriages have taken place in Spain.
